Flash Utility For Mac

See instructions below on how to format a SD card or USB flash device. We recommend using FAT32.

In Disk Utility on your Mac, you can format an external disk for a Windows computer.

If you have an old flash drive or one that was formatted to work with Windows or another operating system, you can still format your flash drive to work on a Mac. Volume Format Most manufacturers use the FAT 32 or MS-DOS (FAT) volume format. Hello again mac forums, I have a problem (surprise surprise) Short version: I need a bootable copy of Disk Utility that I can burn to a CD and use. I'm away from home and unwisely didn't bring my OS dvds. I've searched high and low for a place to download it without luck. Where can I get this simple OS X tool to save my mac?

WARNING: Formatting a disk or volume erases all the files on it. Save any files you need to another volume before formatting.

  1. In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, choose View > Show All Devices.

  2. In the sidebar, select the disk you want to format to use with Windows computers.

  3. Click the Erase button .

  4. Click the Scheme pop-up menu, then choose Master Boot Record.

  5. Click the Format pop-up menu, then choose one of the following:

    • MS-DOS (FAT32)

  6. Enter a name for the volume.

The maximum length for the volume name is 11 characters.

  7. Click Erase, then click Done.
