There is apparently a free and a paid version. I believe the paid version just has better graphics with pretty much the same content. I received a Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx for christmas and it came with a cut-down version of Mapsource called 'Trip and Waypoint Manager.' It seems to do much the same as mapsource for waypoints etc but not a whole lot else. Garmin MapSource WorldMap (CD-ROM) Visit the Garmin Store. 3.1 out of 5 stars 24 ratings. But it is a 2010 version! The downloading directions are wrong - there is no 'run' on the start menu. I had to go to 'command prompt' to get the program to download. You can't move the map around by dragging, as you can Streets and Trips.

Garmin MapSource is a handy software solution that was developed in order to help Garmin devices owners view various map documents as well as various waypoints, routes or tracks and transfer them on their Garmin devices without significant efforts. It is worth mentioning that this application is actually an updater for the Garmin MapSource program, so you must have a previous version. This download area offers free firmware upgrades for select Garmin® units. These upgrades are specific to the specific GPS units and software versions listed. This software should only be uploaded to the unit for which it is intended.
Note: This page describes an obsolete version of GPSBabel that may substantially differ from the current or development version.

Prev | Chapter 3. The Formats | Next |
This format can...
read and write waypoints
read and write tracks
read and write routes
This format has the following options: snlen, snwhite, mpsverout, mpsmergeout, mpsusedepth, mpsuseprox .
This format supports the Garmin Mapsource™ product family.
This format is based on significant reverse-engineering and guesswork. GPSBabel's output appears to be compatible with the various versions of MapSource. Icon mapping is attempted between different MapSource versions. Altitude is supported, but proximity and depth are not.
Naming files *.mps will allow file->open in Mapsource to find the files more easily.
Versions 3, 4, and 5 of the Mapsource data format are handled automatically on input. By default the output is version 5. (Until 3/2004, it was version 3, but since Mapsource updates are free, the convenience of having modern icon sets outweighs the backward compatibility concern. Users of other versions can either upgrade or specify the switches to get output in a compatible format.) Waypoints, routes, and tracklogs are all handled, but map sets are ignored.
Information on the Garmin Mapsource format was provided by Ian Cowley and Mark Bradley. The code was implemented by Robert Lipe and Mark Bradley.
Length of generated shortnames.
This option specifies the length of generated short names on output. The default is 10 characters.
Allow whitespace synth. shortnames.
This option specifies whether to allow whitespace (space, tab, etc.) in generated short names on output. The default is to not allow whitespace.
Version of mapsource file to generate (3,4,5).
This option specifies the format version for the output file. The defaultis version 5, as noted above. Supported versions are 3, 4, and 5.
Merge output with existing file.
This option causes the output to be merged with a pre-existing output file. This allows MapSource sections that aren't handled by GPSBabel (e.g. map sets)to be preserved.
Use depth values on output (default is ignore).
This option causes GPSBabel to write depth values for waypoints. Most input formats do not support depth values, so the default is to not writethem.
Use proximity values on output (default is ignore).
Garmin Update Mapsource
This option causes GPSBabel to write proximity values for waypoints. Most input formats do not support proximity values, so the default is to not writethem.

Garmin has several map management programs that can greatly assist you in getting the most out of your GPS. These free programs include, MapInstall, BaseCamp and MapSource.
What is Garmin MapInstall?
Garmin MapInstall is a simple map management wizard that enables you to select and combine maps located on your computer and download them to your GPS. We recommend that you combine our transparent snowmobile or ATV trail maps with a topographic background map. MapInstall is a simple and quick way to accomplish this. You can get Garmin MapInstall for free from Garmin here. We describe how to use MapInstall to combine our trail maps with other maps and download them to your GPS here. You can get free non-routing topographical maps here.
Note: See Bug in version 4.7.0 version of BaseCamp and MapInstall described here.
What is BaseCamp?
BaseCamp is Garmin’s premier GPS map and data management tool that runs on either Windows or Macintosh computers.
BaseCamp will display any Garmin format map that you have installed on you computer, including our ATV and snowmobile trail maps, free topographic maps, and other maps you purchase from Garmin. If you use one of our smart micro-sd cards which include a integrated trail and topographic map, you can display and use a combined trail and topographic map by connecting your GPS to a computer running BaseCamp.
BaseCamp can be used to manage your your favorite waypoints, tracks logs (where you have ridden), and create custom routes. It is a great tool to pre-plan en expedition, and document your actual travels. It enables you to upload waypoints, tracks and routes from your GPS for storage to your computer, or to download from your computer to your GPS.
BaseCamp manages Garmin’s BirdsEye satellite images for those newer GPS models that support it.
You can import geo-tagged photos you take with your smart phone, and display them on a map at the location where you took them. You can also use Google-Earth to geographically align scanned paper map images and display them as map overlays. These can then be downloaded to your GPS.
It also has a 3d map display mode that will show map features wrapped on a 3d terrain model. This 3d display requires a map that includes digital elevation model (DEM) data, such as Garmin’s TOPO US 2008 or 24K TOPOs.
You can download BaseCamp here.
What is Garmin MapSource?
Garmin MapSource is Garmin’s older map and GPS date management program. It is similar to BaseCamp in many ways, but has fewer features and is therefore somewhat simpler to use. Those who have used older Garmin Handheld GPS models are probably already familiar with MapSource. Our Trail maps and free topographic programs are compatible with MapSource. MapSource only runs on Windows PC’s and not on Macintosh.

MapSource can be used to select multiple maps, combine them into a single file, and then download them to your GPS internal storage or micro-sd card. Like BaseCamp, it can be used to edit, upload and download user track logs, waypoints and routes. Like BaseCamp it has a routing tool you can use to create your own custom routes.
Mapsource For Garmin Gps Device
MapSource program updates can be downloaded for free from Garmin’s site, but updates will not install unless you have previously installed a version of MapSource on your computer. One way to fulfill this “previous install requirement” is to first download and install the free Garmin BaseCamp program. Then, download and install the free MapSource Update. From that point on, you should have a working copy of both BaseCamp and MapSource. You can uninstall BaseCamp and still use MapSource if you decide not to use BaseCamp.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure to re-boot you computer after installing MapSource. It will be unable to make a connection between you Computer and your GPS until you do.
